AN INTRODUCTION TO THE DOMINION

Rumours of a vast and powerful empire in the Gamma Quadrant were heard of during the first and second seasons of DS9. The Ferengi wasted no time in establishing trade agreements with them while the Federation started of cautious hearing of there constant aggression and control of vast areas in the Gamma Quandrant.

First contact with the dominion was not at all friendly. On a rescue mission the USS Odyssey was destroyed by a Jem'Hader suicide run into her deflector dish taking all hands aboard. Although there was no need for this it made a point to the Federation. A point which showed that a new and dangerous enemy lay behind the wormhole, an enemy not just to the Federation but to the whole Alpha Quadrant.

It is discovered that the Dominion had destroyed science and exploration vessels which entered the wormhole as a protest of the Alpha Quadrants' intrusion into its territory. Also the Bajoran colony New Bajor had been obliterated along the colonists. The protoype Federation warship, Uss Defiant, was posted at DS9 while the station had its defences upgraded. For once the entire Alpha Quadrant had something in common. The fear of invasion from the Gamma Quadrant
The Dominion consists of three main elements. The Founders, Vorta and Jem'Hadar. The founders race of shape shifters who were once explorors of space, but because their shapeshifting abilitys other races feared them and persecuted them. As an act of defiance they took up the name changeling which was mean't as a insult. In time the 'changelings' tired of persecution by 'solids' settled on a baron of rock. They genetically engineered the Jem'Hader (seen on the right) as their foot soildiers. To ensure the loyalty of the Jem'Hader they were genetically engineered to behave as the changelings were gods. A drug known as Ketrel White is a dependency of the Jem'Hader, another method to ensure their loyalty. Worlds were asked to join this empire calling itself the Dominion and those that refused felt the wrath of the Jem'Hadar. Which is what happed to the Vorta. But as the centuries past the Vorta became trusted administrators of the Dominion Owning telekinetic powers and immunity to poison made them effective diplomats.
